# What a Missed Call Costs a Trade Business

How often home service calls go unanswered, how to work out what that costs your business, and why Google ads just made it worse.

Most owners know they miss calls. Few know what those calls are worth, because a missed call doesn’t send you an invoice. The job just goes to someone else, and you never hear about it.

Here’s how often it happens, and how to put a real number on it for your business.

## How many calls go unanswered?

Invoca’s July 2026 home services benchmark found that only **52% of inbound calls were answered by a person**. That figure includes misdials and quick hang-ups. When it looked only at calls lasting more than 30 seconds, 73% reached a person.

The trades were far apart:

| Business type | Calls answered by a person |
| -------------- | -------------------------- |
| Plumbing | 74% |
| Lawn and trees | 54% |
| Restoration | 51% |
| HVAC | 34% |
| Construction | 32% |

Take these numbers as a guide, not a verdict on your shop. Invoca sells call tracking software, it hasn’t published the home services sample size, and its customers may not look like a two-truck operation. Your own call log will tell you more.

## Work out your own number

Skip the scary industry averages. Those figures usually come from someone selling you something, and that includes us. Use your numbers instead:

> Missed calls a week × share that are real job inquiries × share of those you’d win × average job value = revenue at risk each week

Here’s a made-up example. It isn’t a benchmark:

1. You miss 10 calls a week.
2. About 3 in 10 are real job inquiries, so that’s 3 calls.
3. You’d normally win half of those, so that’s 1.5 jobs.
4. Your average job is $400, so that’s **$600 a week** in work.

That’s about $2,400 a month in revenue, before your costs. Change any of those numbers and the answer changes, so use your own. Your phone provider’s call log gives you the first one.

## The number leaves out repeat work

One job isn’t always one job. A customer you lose today could’ve become your furnace service every fall, or told their neighbor about you. That’s real money, but it’s hard to measure, so leave it out of your math and treat it as a bonus.

## Why missed calls now cost more on Google

If you run Google Local Services Ads, there’s a newer problem. As of October 1, 2026, a call during business hours can be billable even if you don’t answer it, as long as the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds.

So you could pay for the lead and still lose the job. If you buy leads, answering them matters more than it did a few months ago.

## What actually fixes it

You have a few options, and they don’t all cost the same:

- **Answer more calls yourself.** This is free, but it’s hard to do from under a sink.
- **Hire someone.** A good office person does far more than answer the phone, but they cost a wage and they go home at night.
- **Use an answering service.** Real people handle it, usually billed by the call or minute.
- **Use an AI phone agent.** It picks up day or night and takes the job details. Depending on the setup, it can book the job too.

Ring First’s packages start at $800 setup and $150 a month, and they’re all on the [pricing page](https://ring-first.com/pricing/). Run your own math first. If the number is small, you might not need us.
